It has taken centuries of invasions, conquests and occupations from the Greeks, Phoenicians, Moors, Romans and northern Europeans to shape the Portuguese character. Independent since 1143 and a member of the EU since 1986, Portugal’s people radiate warmth and hospitality, making this an ideal destination to relax and unwind. Situated on the western edge of the Iberian peninsula and fringed by the Atlantic, this small country – of the same size as Scotland – is blessed with a mild, year-round climate; hot, dry summers average 21C (70F) and warm winters have an average temperature of 10C (50F). The entire length of the coast is fringed almost continuously with unspoilt, sandy beaches, interrupted only by small traditional villages and the three main populated regions of Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve. This enchanting country has many corners to be explored. The jewels in the crown are the southern coastal resort of the Algarve and the Silver Coast. These regions are bathed in year-round sunshine with a distinctly upmarket feel, offering high quality accommodation and amenities. As befits are international resorts, water sports, golf, shops and international and local cuisine are all available.

Silver Coast Portugal

Less than an hour’s drive from Lisbon airport along the new motorway is the Silver Coast. Offering a life of rural calm amid spectacular scenery, it is at the same time perfectly equipped with all the modern facilities of transport, healthcare, education and leisure that make life here so agreeable. For golf enthusiasts this is the new destination in Portugal. Eighteen-hole courses at Praia d'el Rey and Rio Maior are complemented by nine-hole courses at Consolação and Porto Novo and the upcoming golf courses of Nazare and S.Martinho do Porto ones. The beaches are beautiful and fine-sanded. In summer, sea breezes keep temperatures just below 30C (86F), with the nights cool enough for comfortable sleep. The average temperature in January is 15C by day and 8C by night. With important centres for watersports, freshwater sailing, windsurfing and hang-gliding all nearby, there are activities to suit all tastes. From equestrian academies to thermal baths, paragliding schools to ceramics workshops, young and old can spend holiday after holiday here and never do the same thing twice. One highlight is Nazaré, Portugal’s most famous fishing town. Today the fishermen still set to sea in traditional boats with high-curved prows painted with eyes, a relic of an ancient cult. The town is well known for its costumes, which can still be seen at festival time.
